NPPES is a web-based system designed to assign standard unique identifiers for healthcare providers and health plans so that electronic transmission of health information can be accomplished more effectively, efficiently, and securely. In order to improve user verification and enhance fraud, waste, and abuse identification initiatives TurningPoint integrated the modernized NPPES solution with several other healthcare systems and technologies, including: PECOS, NPPES Public Search, CMS Identification and Access (I&A), End User Support (EUS), and the NPPES Virtual Data Center (VDC). This enables NPPES to cross-reference data in near-real-time, improving data accuracy while keeping the registration process for users efficient and streamlined.

The NPPES team increased system usability and met the US Digital Service mission by using open source products to improve efficiency and effectiveness, simplify the user experience, and implement enhancements such as a delegation function, automated form completion, self-service, and smart search features. As a result of these modernization activities, NPPES usage has improved significantly and manual interventions have declined by 50 percent.

"TurningPoint congratulates the CMS Center for Program Integrity for this recognition," said David Hughes, co-founder of TurningPoint. "We are proud that our modernization of the NPPES system has been so successful in preventing fraud, waste, and abuse in our healthcare system."

Award winners were determined by a panel of judges that included government and industry leaders who evaluated applicants from across the industry, selecting awardees based on their willingness to take on achievable risk and to deliver real results in support of their mission.

This is the second Federal Health IT Innovation Award for TurningPoint, having previously won in the Big Data category for the CMS Advanced Provider Screening (APS) program in 2015.
